Le Grand Sault de la rivière Madeleine 

Au début du XXe siècle, le petit village de Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine a participé au développement de l’industrie forestière qui a modelé la Gaspésie. Un moulin à papier a été installé en 1917 sur un site forestier d’une grande beauté appelé le Grand Sault (une chute naturelle de vingt mètres sur la rivière Madeleine). En 1921, le premier papier est manufacturé et la production atteindra la centaine de ballots de papier par jour. Suite à de nombreux déboires, la Cape Magdalein Pulp and Paper Company ferme en 1926.

En 2015, nous avons exploré des sites qui ont été marqués par les activités du moulin du Grand Sault: 1- la chute nommée le Grand Sault et la portion de la rivière interdite au public ; 2- le parcours du train dans la forêt ; 3- le site où est enfouie la locomotive ; 4- l’emplacement du quai dans l’anse du village.

The Grand Sault of the Madeleine river 

In the early twentieth century, the village of Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine participated in the development of the forest industry that shaped the Gaspé Peninsula. A paper mill was installed in 1917 at a forest site of great beauty known as the Grand Sault (a natural fall of twenty meters on the Madeleine River). In 1921, the first paper was produced and production reached the hundred bales of paper per day. After numerous setbacks, the Cape Magdalein Pulp and Paper Company ultimately closed in 1926.

In 2015, we explored sites that have been marked by the activity of the Grand Sault mill: 1. The fall called the Grand Sault and the portion of the Madeleine River forbidden to the public; 2- the train route in the forest; 3- the site where the locomotive is buried; 4- and the location of the wharf in the cove of the village.

La Rivière interdite, 2016

La Rivière interdite questionne l’histoire et l’avenir de l’environnement naturel remarquable d’une rivière à saumon.

La Rivière interdite est une scuplture vidéo événementielle en forme de quai. Elle a été installée pendant deux jours sur le site de l’appontement (aujourd’hui disparu) à partir duquel les ballots de papier du moulin du Grand Sault étaient chargés sur des goëlettes.

Les images vidéo ont été filmées sur la splendide rivière Madeleine dans ses portions encore interdites ajourd’hui au public.

The Forbidden River questions the history and the future of the remarkable natural environment of a salmon river.

The Forbidden River is a video sculpture in the shape of a wharf. It has been installed on the site of the historic loading dock (today disappeared) from which the bundles of paper from the mill of Grand Sault were loaded on schooners.

The video images were filmed on the magnificent Madeleine River in portions that are forbidden to the public.

Projet de sculpture publique

Ce projet vise à réaliser et installer à Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine une œuvre d’art publique praticable, lumineuse et interactive de grandes dimensions qui souligne le patrimoine historique et naturel du village, mobilise le présent et regarde vers l’avenir.

Bouger la mémoire serait constituée de 18 grands arceaux (274 cm de diamètre chacun) provenant de l’ancienne conduite d’eau¹ du moulin à papier du Grand Sault de la Rivière-Madeleine. Les arceaux seraient disposés de manière à créer un parcours en forme du signe de l’infini (∞) dans lequel le public pourra circuler librement (dimensions totales de l’œuvre : 2200 x 1100 x 275 cm). L’ensemble serait animé par un système d’éclairage dynamique à la fine pointe de la technologie.

Nous cherchons par ses dimensions, sa forme (le signe de l’infini), ses qualités visuelles, physiques et sa nature praticable, lumineuse et interactive, à constituer un symbole tourné vers l’avenir et le développement de la communauté.

De par sa matière issue d’un complexe industriel du siècle dernier, Bouger la mémoire servirait aussi de marqueur historique dans une municipalité dont le centenaire a été fêté en 2016.

Cette sculpture serait installée sur une parcelle du terrain dit de « la Seigneurie »². Positionner la sculpture sur cette parcelle représente un pas historique vers une réappropriation par la population locale de l’accès à la rivière Madeleine entre son embouchure au Golfe du Saint-Laurent et la chute du Grand Sault. La sculpture Bouger la mémoire serait par son implantation sur un site jusqu’alors interdit d’accès public, un signe d’ouverture pour de nouvelles façons de gérer l’environnement exceptionnel de la rivière Madeleine et d’en faire un lieu d’activité pour tous. L’œuvre servirait de levier positif sur les mentalités.

1-  La conduite été démantelée il y a longtemps et ses multiples arceaux morcelés ont été laissés pêle-mêle à l’abandon sur le site du moulin. Avec l’accord et l’aide de la municipalité, nous en avons récupéré suffisamment de parties pour reconstituer 18 arceaux dans leur forme d’origine.

2-  Ce terrain se situe sur l’ancienne et immense propriété de la compagnie papetière Domtar le long de la rivière Madeleine. Cette propriété a été rachetée en 2008 par Investissement Québec et est aujourd’hui administrée par sa filiale Gestion Forestière Lacroix. Cette parcelle sera acquise par la municipalité de Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine en vue d’accueillir Bouger la Mémoire.

Moving the Memory

A public sculpture project

This project aims to create and install in Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine a practicable, luminous and interactive work of public art of great dimensions that highlights the historical and natural heritage of the village, as well as mobilizes the present and looks to the future.

Moving the Memory would consist of 18 large arches (with a diameter of 274 cm each) from the old water pipe ² of the Grand Sault River mill of the Madeleine River. The arches would be arranged so as to create a path in the form of an infinity sign (∞) in which the public could circulate freely (total dimensions of the work: 2200 x 1100 x 275 cm). A dynamic lighting system would animate the ensemble.

We seek by its dimensions, its form (infinity sign), its visual and physical qualities, as well as its practicable, luminous and interactive nature, to compose a symbol oriented towards the future and community development.

Thanks to its material from an industrial complex of the last century, Moving the Memory would also serve as a historical marker in a municipality whose centennial was celebrated in 2016.

This sculpture would be installed on a piece of land known as the « Seigneurie » ². Locating the sculpture at this site represents a historic step towards the re-appropriation by the local population of access to the Madeleine River between the fall of the Grand Sault and its mouth at the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Installing Moving the Memory at this site, which access is currently forbidden to the public, would constitute a sign of openness to new ways to manage the Madeleine River’s exceptional environment and make it a place of activity for everyone. The work would serve as a positive lever on mentalities.

1-  The pipeline was dismantled long ago and its multiple fragmented arches were abandoned pell-mell on the mill site. With the agreement and assistance of the municipality, we recovered enough parts to reconstitute 18 arches in their original form.

2-  This piece of land is located on the former large property of the Domtar paper company along the Madeleine River. Investissement Québec has acquired the property in 2008 and it is now managed by its subsidiary Gestion Forestière Lacroix. The municipality of Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine would acquire the parcel in order to welcome Moving the Memory.
