L’agora
Le puits d’Asbestos a été creusé pendant plus de 100 ans par des milliers d’opérations de dynamitage qui ont sculpté ses parois. L’ensemble a pris l’aspect d’une gigantesque agora antique aux immenses gradins. L’oeuvre luminocinétique Agora Lux offre une mise en valeur esthétique, technologique et spectaculaire à ce site patrimonial de l’Estrie.
Jeux de lumière
Aux rapides crescendos visuels suggérant le dynamitage, succèdent des ondulations multicolores finement modulées. La nature immatérielle, rythmique et cadencée de l’oeuvre la situe quelque part entre le feu d’artifice et l’aurore boréale.
Le projet se veut être :
– une oeuvre qui respecte, rehausse et anime l’environnement du puits.
– une oeuvre lumineuse monumentale immatérielle et spectaculaire sans équivalent au Québec.
– la valorisation sur le long terme du patrimoine historique minier de la ville.
– la transformation d’un puits minier (qui a eu souvent mauvaise presse en raison de la nature du minerai exploité) en un facteur rassembleur pour la ville et la région.

The Agora
For over one hundred years, dynamiting activity has gradually sculpted the walls of the open pit mine at Asbestos, giving it the appearance of a gigantic agora with immense terraces. Agora Lux is a lumino-kinetic work designed to bring an aesthetic, technological and spectacular dimension to this heritage site of Asbestos and the Eastern Townships.
Play of Light
The rapid-moving visual crescendos suggestive of dynamite explosions are followed by subtly modulated multi-coloured undulations. The immaterial, rhythmic and cadenced nature of the work make it a cross between fireworks and the northern lights.
The project aims to be:
– a work which respects, enhances and animates the open pit environment;
– a monumental, immense and spectacular work of illumination like no other in Quebec;
– an appreciation of the long-term historical mining heritage of the town;
– the transformation of an open pit mine (often criticized because of the mineral it produces) into a site of unification for the town and the region.
